Pfizer Inc. (NYSE: PFE) announced the release of a new certification application for the Company's new cholesterol-reducing drug, Viagra.
The Company is adding Viagra's brand name "Cialis," which the company is using as a generic equivalent of the drug.
Viagra is currently approved for use in men who have a coronary heart condition called PDE-5 (phosphodiesterase type 5) inhibitors, a drug used to treat erectile dysfunction.
It is also approved to help treat benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) in men with an enlarged prostate. It is not approved for use in women.
Pfizer's announcement comes as Pfizer's Lipitor, the world's most popular cholesterol drug, is now on the market.
Pfizer has signed an agreement to pay $10.7 billion to settle lawsuits filed against the Company for alleged price gouging of its generics.
The settlement resolves claims that the company paid for Viagra without the benefit of prior approval from the FDA and the U. S. Supreme Court.
Pfizer's other generic drug products include Pfizer's Cialis and Lipitor.
The Company is continuing to work with companies and the public to develop and market new drugs for the treatment of ED.
Pfizer will continue to maintain its commitment to providing patients with reliable, FDA-approved treatments, including the Company's "Cialis."

Tianjin Lee-Nae, 21, who works as a pharmacist at Gauteng Pharmacy, was arrested in Cape Town for selling Viagra in a South Africa branded pharmacy in the town of Mombabandu.
The arrest came after a tip-off that Lee-Nae had contacted his doctor about the medication in an online consultation.
Lee-Nae, who is from West Coast Province, was questioned by police and was arrested on suspicion of selling the prescription medicine. A court had earlier ordered the arrest to be made public but the case was then transferred to the South Africa Revenue Service (SARS).
Lee-Nae has been previously jailed for two years.
A spokesperson for the SARS said: "We are very sorry to learn that the arrest of this man has been brought to light, and we are working with the police and medical officials to bring this issue to their attention."
Lee-Nae was arrested at the time of his arrest.
The police said that the arrest was made after Lee-Nae's arrest, which is why the investigation was ongoing.
